  • Canonization Of Mary MacKillop

In October all Australians will be joining together to celebrate the Canonization of Mary MacKillop. This is particularly special to the Catholic Aboriginal community, the concern Mary showed for the welfare and education of Aboriginal peoples is well documented and her legacy continues through the work of the Sisters of St Joseph. The Aboriginal community of Melbourne have produced a Journey Stone to commemorate this momentous occasion. It has become custom to give travellers a journey stone for safe travel. The stone is hand painted by an Aboriginal artist. People who wish to take these stones with them on the pilgrim are asked to take an order form from the foyer of the church. Stones are $7.50 each plus postage.

  • Message From Archbishop Philip Wilson DD JCL

My dear brothers and sisters, as part of our program of building bridges with followers of the Muslim faith, I commend to you part of a letter recently sent to Muslims from the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue to celebrate the great feast of Id al-Fitr, after their month of fasting in Ramadan.

We open our hearts to mutual forgiveness and reconciliations for a peaceful and fruitful coexistence; to recognize what we have in common and to respect differences, as a basis for a culture of dialogue; to recognize and respect the dignity of each human being without any bias related to ethnicity or religious affiliation; to recall the importance of education in the home, school, churches and mosques.

Please take the time in this next week, to learn something about Islam and its followers and to see that what unites us a people of faith is great indeed. Let us be peace builders and extend a hand in friendship to those from the Muslim faith who live along side us, for Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God."

Ten Things Everyone Needs to Know about Islam - if you are interested to find out more, please take a brochure from the back of the church .
